How To Wear... the Daryl Jean

  • 2 min read

Meet the Daryl Barrel Leg Jean.

Finding the perfect pair of jeans can feel like a quest, but the barrel leg shape is everywhere in womenswear right now because it is "super flattering on all different shapes". Named after the fabulous Daryl Hannah, the Daryl jean embraces this contemporary, fashion-forward cut.

The Fit & Features

"Essentially, a barrel leg jean is what you expect it to be. It's full bulges on the thigh. So you've got a nice round shape that tapers in". Inspired by workwear and French riding wear, this silhouette offers a bit more volume while fitting "slightly neater on the waist".

To achieve this unique shape, we utilized precise pattern work:

  • It is darted on the hip with "a really forward side seam" highlighted by twin-needle stitching.
  • Instead of standard denim pockets, it features a "classic trouser slant pocket like something you'd find on a flat front chino" to keep the front line ultra-flattering.
  • The back features two decent-sized workwear pockets.

The Fabric Philosophy

Our organic cotton denim is sourced from ISKO in Turkey, one of the leading sustainable denim production houses on the planet. It includes a small amount of stretch, giving you "as close as you can get to I guess men's authentic denim but with that comfort".

Unwashed for Longevity

"Another thing we do here is we don't wash it. So there's no sort of fade effect or extra water used". While most companies use chemical or enzyme washes so the fabric feels softer on day one, we leave our true denim raw.

"You're gonna have to do a little bit of work on this denim because it won't feel quite as soft and stretchy as maybe some do, but it is so much better for the longevity of the product. It will wear much better". Because it retains its natural indigo, you can get them to look beautifully faded after 10 years of authentic wear and wash.

The Colours:

  • Indigo: Finished with classic tobacco stitching.
  • Blue: Finished with ecru stitching.

How to Style Them

In its "box fresh state, it's a really smart looking denim," making it easy to dress up for an evening out. Because it fits neater on the waist, it pairs wonderfully with a loose but cropped boxy tee, vintage shirts, our Connie knitwear, or layered as "double denim" with our Jodie denim jacket.

On most, the cut is slightly cropped, making it ideal for showcasing your footwear:

  • A fringe tassel loafer (with or without socks).
  • Birkenstocks in the summer.
  • Trainers, Walshes, flat pumps, or an old-school canvas tennis shoe.

I have long fancied including a classic Guernsey in our collection and so last summer I was delighted to have the chance to visit the Le Tricoteur factory on the island's western coast.

Everything we do is a celebration of the people, the skills and the traditions of the  amazing factories we work with, all of them the very best of their kind, all of them deeply  embedded in the culture and history of their communities.

Great photographs don’t just show our clothes, they tell our story and connect you with what we do.

Our philosophy around photography is really simple: just keep it honest. Shoot the clothes as they are, don’t alter or pin them, don’t retouch. When our clothes arrive and you put them on we want them to look like the clothes you see in the pictures.
