Recently, we've had the pleasure of working with Phoebe Jacob, who is in her final year of studying Fashion Photography at Leeds Arts University.
For her project, Phoebe chose to feature creatives at work at Assembly House, an artist-led community arts organisation, project space and studios that are home to 65 creatives, including educators, performers, painters, sculptors, illustrators, designers and video artists.

A bit about Phoebe, in her own words:
"I’m Phoebe Jacob a photographer born to a Jewish, South African mother and an English father. I have lived all over the uk but I currently call Leeds home, as it’s where I’m in my final year studying fashion photography at Leeds arts university. I love experimenting and creating multi media creative projects. There’s a big emphasis on sustainability in the production of my work and I am aiming to continue in the fashion industry as consciously as possible. "
All the artists had their portraits taken and were able to select pieces of our clothing to wear for the shoot as well as tell us a bit about their work.
According to Archie Brooks, a resident sculptor:
“This place is a sanctuary for artists, here we’re a large community of like minded and friendly people, without it i think my sculpting would be a lonely endeavour with less inspiration. Community is essential for artists, to be surrounded by people with the same struggle, ideals and motivations only leads to a more fulfilled art practice.”

“I'm a sculptor working here at Assembly House. I combine wood and natural materials with movement, time and observation through the guise of creating artworks that respond to and are activated by an audience. My current body of work is a collection of kinetic sculptures all focussing on ideas of self observation, repetition and nature's flow of time parallel to our own constructed ideas of time.
I immediately was drawn to the apron as someone who uses a lot of wood, the pockets and protection offered exactly what I would usually use, its was heavy-duty and solid. I Paired it with the purple jumper as the colours melded nicely. "

“I’m a photorealist pencil artist at Assembly House. My work mostly focuses on portraiture and the body, and my adaptations of the grid that each piece is based on tend to influence or even define the meaning of my work. My work tends to comment on the relationships we have with our bodies, how we live in them and what we subject them to.
I love stripes, and sometimes in the studio I can be so hung up on function and staying warm that I forget to wear something that’ll bring me some joy too. The fun colour socks definitely help with that as well. My feet go numb with the cold in winter here, so warm socks are an absolute must.”

"I’m a painter, dealing mostly with what I call Shamanic Calligraphy. Using only three primal colours (red, black, and white), I try to capture the spirit and potency of a word or phrase that resonates with me. The finished works can be enjoyed as abstract paintings, or as pieces of calligraphy to those that can read them. To myself, they are totemic representations of the power that inhabits words.
I am always drawn to bright, bold, sometimes loud colours. This might be because I have spent a large part of my life in South-east Asia, or it might just be because we need colour and joy in these stressful and angst-ridden times. I also like the idea that you don’t need to be rich to bring some colour and vibes into the world."

"I am a quilt artist working in collages. I use photo imagery as a starting point, combining different fabrics, machine pieces and quilted, using self dyed and printed fabrics. I call my works quilts as they are layered with a cotton wadding that gives thickness and substance as in traditional quilts. The fabric collages are visual composition but they can appear flat til they are quilted when they develop richness, texture and depth. I love the traditional quilts and the long and varied history of their making, the rhythm in creating the fabrics. I’d like my work to honour those traditions.
The colour orange really appealed to me. I work a lot in colour but don’t normally wear bright coloured clothes."

"I like muted tones so I went for a classic grey hoodie, this is a staple forme so it felt like the natural choice. I also like the comfort of being able to put my hood up and it helps me to focus. I love layering my clothes, soI put on my work jacket over the top, keeping me warm and giving me loads of places to carry tools. I am also wearing these bright orangecotton socks which is the perfect pop of colour for me, Orange is alsoone of my favourite colours and it matches the colourway of my trainers too!"

"I’m a sculptor who's interested in creating ‘in-between’ spaces that serve as a portal to ‘other worlds’ unlike the ones we can see and touch. These worlds aim to reflect upon the material traces we each leave behind, which both reveal and conceal personal identities and histories through storytelling, memory, dreams and unearthed momentos. I chose to work with materials that hold a weighted memory such as clay, wood, fabric, earthly materials and found objects to create anthropomorphic sculptures. These sculptures reference the body, earth, ritual and symbolic objects.
I love to wear patterns making my choice for the striped top easy, the bold, bright yellow socks looked like something i’d already have been wearing."

"I am an Irish artist that explores concepts such as folklore, dreams and symbols of being through painting. I also work on set designs, so sometimes you may find me making paper mache heads and props or trying to figure out a dream I had, then placing that image onto canvas.I am currently trying to push through my old ways of seeing and process my paintings in a freer style. I also drink a lot of coffee.
I love wearing aprons when I am working. I store little trinkets and snacks, as well as paint brushes. The apron has such a beautiful cut and I enjoyed how it sat on my body."

" I am a mosaic artist and I like to use second hand materials, often found in charity shops, at recollection places, saving materials being chucked in the bin or passed down to me. At times i find myself using my art for therapeutic reasons, in order to express deep inner feelings dealing with grief, in other times i use it to escape from these feelings, to just create something beautiful to find inner peace. Sometimes this happens simultaneously.
Today’s grueling task was grouting a mosaic that uses black grout to encase nostalgic kids toys, to which i felt the apron would be a great addition to avoid getting too messy. It was very durable and pleasant to wear."
