"This is, we believe, the only swimming short on the planet that contains absolutely zero plastic." Patrick
The Story
Named after Scottish swimming legend David Wilkie, for two reasons. As Patrick explains:
"David Wilkie swam, trained at Warrender Baths, which was where I learned to swim as a little nipper up in Edinburgh. Secondly, David Wilkie has an absolutely banging mustache. So, two fantastic reasons why Wilkie gets the nod ahead of Peter Goodhew and all the other swimming greats."
Fabric
The outer fabric is 190g cotton, 100% organic, and fully traceable:
"It's grown in Turkey, it's spun in Turkey, it's dyed, and it's woven in Turkey. It's fully traceable 100% organic cotton."
The inner mesh liner is also 100% cotton, knitted in Leicester.
The Make
This is what sets the Wilkie apart: it's believed to be the only swimming short in the world made with zero plastic. Every component that's usually synthetic has been replaced with a natural alternative:
Elastic (legs and waist): cotton and natural rubber, rather than the usual elastane and polyester
Drawcord: 100% cotton
Button: a natural corozo nut button
Thread: sewn entirely with cotton thread
Label: since every woven label supplier uses polyester, Patrick's team used a textile cotton label instead, printed with water-soluble ink
The result, as Patrick puts it:
"This swim short contains absolutely zero plastic, 100% natural materials, completely biodegradable both in the soil and in seawater and possibly in other water too."
Why It Matters
Most swim shorts are made almost entirely from plastic, nylon or polyester, sometimes recycled, but plastic all the same. And plastic swimwear sheds microplastics with every wear, not just in the wash:
"If you're scuffing your bum on, you know, on a rock, sitting on the sand on the beach, sitting on the edge of a pool, you are wearing this fabric away and you're creating microplastic particles which are working their way into the ocean, working their way up the food chain."
Which brings us to the main point: If we love the oceans, why are we wearing plastic shorts in the ocean, putting more plastic in the ocean?

One Track Club is a global, science-driven running community and coaching platform designed for "everyday athletes" seeking structured training who we've been chatting to recently about our nature positive running gear. They've very kindly offered CC customers a month's free trial (open to everyone), on top of which you have the chance to win a coaching package worth £450.
We asked award-winning photographer, writer and skater Stuart Clapp (whose photos now appear in the pages of skateboard magazines - something that would have blown the mind of his younger self), along with his pals in the South Essex skateboarding community, to field-test the Community Clothing trousers.
